| Description | The North Door is an outcome of an international solo project initiated by Deborah Hay and Zodiak – Center for New Dance in 2004. After a four-week workshop by Hay for six chosen participants in August, 2004 each dancer committed to a daily practice of the solo for a period of three months, thus creating a personal adaptation of the preset score. Hay calls her set of practices “playing awake”. Hay poses a question which is addressed through bodily practice: What if my perception of time and space, the self and the other, would be unique and original in each moment? What if the 73 trillion cells in my body have the ability to perceive the unique happening of time and space? What if my perception is my dance? Hay did not transmit her choreography as movement sequences, but created a spatial and verbal terrain where the question of perception is placed on the body. The dancer poses this question of practice again and again with each dance performance. Therefore, each dance performance will be a “playing awake” situation for both the dancer and the spectator, who is brought into this circle of openness. This perception practice as bodily questioning is impossible to do. The dancer does not have any material to perform because it is only the sensual questioning which is the dance: My perception of time passing is the dance, my lived relation to choreographic structure and spatial significances is the dance. This you can't carry out as assignment. It can only be played out. So the dance becomes as the practice of the performance or as the performance of the practice.
