Description | The dancer is wrapped in his own skin, books in their covers. People read books and architecture through their senses. The building can be read through its forms and surfaces, but no where is life if it is uninhabited. Living is a state of being rooted in the world. All buildings form unique places, but there is no space without an event, and no event without space. Choreography and architecture are dominated by the same forces dictated by physics, with which one must come to terms. |
Other Information |
Anybody's Architecture: National Library of Finland is the fourth part in a series of five choreographic works combining the art of dance, architecture and live music. Choreography, concept and direction: Ismo-Pekka Heikinheimo The movement material was created together with the dancer Architectural consultant: Simon le Roux Our work is inspired by the architecture and atmosphere of the National Library, its activities and beautiful books. The oldest scientific library in Finland is a temple of science and a shrine of books. As one enters the main building of the National Library, one steps 180 years back in history. One is surrounded by great stacks of books that rise from floor to floor towards the light coming from the dome. Multicoloured allegorical paintings on the arches tell of antiquity, poetry, philosophical wisdom, exotic languages, law and natural science. The 28 stucco marbled columns of the Cupola Hall support dark mahogany galleries. The centre of this great space is a void where our performance takes place. |
