Description |
"Suddenly a mighty mass emerged from the water, and shot up perpendicularly into the air. It was the whale". – Miriam Coffin or the Whale Fisherman by Joseph C. Hart The White Whale is a performance of unpretentious movement and indescribable atmospheres. In the expanding landscape of the abstract, an image of a white whale is found and presented, finally causing the capsizing of everything. The performance departs from Herman Melville's novel Moby Dick; or The Whale (1851). The white Whale is an objective of the two dance artists' to find the specific, abstract truth of this particular performance, much like Melville's capitain Ahab's objective is to find the white whale - with passion that borders on obsession. The novel works as a toolbox for the choreographers and the structure of the book as the basis for the choreography. The White Whale is the second co-choreographde work by Jouni Järvenpää and Maija Reeta Raumanni. The White Whale is a contuation of the artists' previous work Arrangements of Ruins and Visions (2013), a choreography that focused on the abstract in a dance performance. |
