Description |
Carl Knif’s solo choreography Claude glass is based on The Four Seasons composed by Antonio Vivaldi in 1725 and adapted by a group of Swedish electro-acoustic musicians. The title refers to the small black mirrors used by 18th century painters to simplify, darken and endow the landscape with a painterly quality. The stage is like a tableau vivant, casting an occasional rosy pallor on the events portrayed on stage in much the same way as a black mirror beautifies the landscape. As the piece unfolds, Knif’s abstract dance vocabulary evolves from the compulsive to the fluid and lyrical. Through its poetic associations and black humour, the piece explores the problem of work vis-à-vis creativity. Is the creative spark extinguished if you try too hard or take yourself too seriously? If the flame is out, how can you bring a dead landscape back to life? |
